Madrigaal

Een vleugel lijkt er uit elk schouderblad
te groeien en in haar gevouwen handen
houdt ze iets – ‘t lijkt of ze ervoor bad –
zich voor de borst dat ’t hart kan doen ontbranden.
Vurig bidden, zich sereen bezinnen,
zijn voor een moeder ’t één net als het ander.

Ze haalt zich slechts haar kind’ren voor de zinnen,
dan volgt de geest, die weert hen van het kwaad
door te volbrengen waar zij aan beginnen.

En zelfs bij elk klein alledaags verraad
sluit ze haar ogen, leeft ze met hun daad,

vergeeft ook wat de Heer verboden had,
alsof ze met God zelf haar krachten mat.

A lone wolf makes its way to an outcrop, surrounded by thistles and a landscape with cypresses. This piece was one of the first on my Facebook page that turned out to resonate with somebody and comes from a place that is probably familiar to many of us: we feel scarred by life and what has happened around us, somehow we pull through, and we conclude that we have become all the wiser for it. Then again, few things are as easy as telling yourself tales where you turn out to be the hero.

I chose this transparent light glass for the hare by accident. After the first firing, it turned out bright yellow. The result is a spooky, restless effect that fits current events all too well.
